T-1 lines offer dedicated Internet connections that provide high speed, high availability, instant Internet connections using leased fiber optic lines instead of existing regular phone or cable lines. A T-1 appeals to users who rely on certain upload and download speeds when accessing the Internet to transfer large files or participate in video conferences.
T-1 lines are capable of carrying 24 digitized voice channels or data at 1,544,000 bits per second, or 1.544 Mbps. It is a symmetrical connection, allowing for downloads and uploads of up to 1.5 Mbps ? 30 times as fast as 56k dial-up. A single T1 connection can support dozens to hundreds of users, but speed and efficiency drops as more people use it simultaneously. T-1 lines are extremely reliable and are good choices for businesses that rely heavily on employee and customer access to data and applications. Most T1 access providers guarantee 99.99% uptime over the course of a year. The standard contract length for T1 Internet access is three years.
Typical costs:
Full (1.5 Mbps) T1. Provides voice and data on the same digital circuit. Monthly T1 prices range from $250 to $1,000, depending on contract lengths. Users should expect to pay initial setup costs from $250 to $1,000 for equipment and installation. Prices include the phone company's monthly local loop (local phone line) charge, which is typically $150 and up. T-1 service providers include AT&T Managed Internet Service and Speakeasy[1] .
Fractional T1. Uses only a portion of the total bandwidth for a percentage of a full T1 rate. While fees are less for Fractional T-1, equipment costs and local phone loop services are the same compared to regular T-1 services, so rates are only slightly lower than standard T1. Speakeasy[2] charges $299.95 per month for this compared to $389.95 for its standard T-1 service.
Burstable T1. A "pay as you go" service, burstable T1 provides a set amount of bandwidth at all times, but also offers the ability to tap into much greater bandwidth during high traffic spikes. AT&T Managed Internet Service charges between $509.80 and $722.20 for this service.
