The once-dominant analog tube TVs (also called Direct View TVs, Cathode Ray Tube TVs or CRT TVs) have been overtaken by newer TV technology. Since the start of 2009, when television stations began transitioning to all-digital broadcasts, most of the new television sets now sold are flat panel display types such as plasma or LCD. Major TV manufacturers no longer make tube TVs and national retailers do not carry tube TVs in their stores or websites. However, new tube TVs can still be found for sale online. Some models even include an integrated DVD player and have a digital tuner for digital TV reception.
Typical costs:
A 13" tube TV typically costs around $100-$190. The Haier HTR13[1] with digital tuning can be found for about $110-$125. The Coby TVDVD1390[2] includes a digital TV tuner and a front-loading DVD player for about $160-$190.
For a 20" tube TV, the cost ranges from $150 to $220 for a digital-ready television. The Haier HTR20[3] is available for about $155-$170. Ones with a combo DVD player such as the Haier TCR20[4] ($150-$210) or the Coby TVDVD2090[5] ($200) are also available.
Tube TVs should come with a remote control, batteries and audio/video cables.
.
Additional costs:
Newer tube TVs can support digital TV formats. To actually watch TV shows, cable TV($11-$127), satellite service($20-$110) or over-the-air broadcast TV signals will be required. Cable and satellite costs depend on the programming tier chosen. . High-definition content can add $8-$10 to cable or satellite subscription fees.. Broadcast TV, while free, still needs an antenna ($10-$200).
With an older, used analog tube TV, a digital converter box will be needed to watch television programming. These typically range from around $40-$65.
Discounts:
Some online retailers offer free shipping on these television sets.
Shopping for a tube tv:
The tube TVs available online are made by smaller TV manufacturers. Amazon[6] and its Marketplace sellers (companies that use Amazon as part of their storefront) offer models made by Coby[7] , Haier and Sansuii.
Larger (and older) used tube TVs can be found on Craigslist.org[8] . These can be bigger than the 13" and 20" newer tube TVs on the market, but often lack digital tuning.
