Medium: Pokémon GO is based on the freemium model and is free to download
High: Active Pokémon GO players might spend $0-$20+ a month
Pokémon is a multimedia franchise spanning the Trading Card Game (TCG), video games, television series and movies, and an augmented reality mobile game, Pokémon GO. Pokémon games and stories are set in a world where people live alongside pocket monsters, or Pokémon. In Pokémon GO, players travel to real-world locations like public art pieces and shops which are designated as places to collect items, find Pokémon, and battle opponents.
Typical costs:
Pokémon GO is free to download and play on iPhones and Android devices. It is based on a freemium model where the game is free to play, but can cost money to access special events, wear special outfits, get items that are out-of-stock, or advance in the game more quickly.
In summer 2020, the online Pokémon GO Fest event, where players could discover rare Pokémon, cost $15. In 2021, Pokémon GO Fest was discounted to $5.
While many players play for free, or only pay to access the annual GO Fest for $5-$15, active players can spend $10-$20 or more each month to access the items they need more quickly, or to accelerate their advancement.
What should be included:
The free Pokémon GO app contains everything a player needs to get started playing, along with an Android or iPhone, and access to data either via Wi-Fi or through a data plan.
Additional costs:
Players can earn up to 50 Pokécoins per day by beating other Pokémon at designated gym locations and holding off challengers for a little over 8 hours. If a player doesn't have enough coins, they can purchase 100 Pokécoins for $1, and 1,200 Pokécoins for $10.
If a player's best Pokémon are injured, they can use a potion to heal damage. While potions are fairly common for free, a player can buy 10 max potions for 200 Pokécoins, or about 20 cents per potion.
Using a Lucky Egg will double the amount of experience points a player gains for 30 minutes, and cost 80 Pokécoins, or about 80 cents.
It's almost a requirement to purchase additional storage space so their character can collect more Pokémon or carry more items. Expanding their item bag to carry 50 more items or expanding their Pokémon storage to collect 50 more Pokémon costs 200 Pokécoin, or about $2. An advanced player may have expanded each storage 20 times or more, which would cost $80+ if they had to purchase all of the Pokécoins without earning any in gyms.
A more stylish, more flattering, or amusing article of clothing for their virtual avatar can cost 150-500 Pokécoins, so a full outfit could cost $3-$15.
Pokémon GO requires relatively little data on a cellular data plan, but to play the game where Wi-Fi is not available, it does require a data plan (or a mobile hot spot provided by someone else), which can run $10-$40 a month.
