The Acer C7 Chromebook was released in late 2012 on the heels of Samsung's Chromebook release -- both Samsung and Acer created the ultrabooks with Google. The Acer C7 Chromebook is a basic lightweight laptop, or ultrabook, with limited capabilities, power and storage but with an appealing price tag. The C7 Chromebook works well for web browsing and writing email, but doesn't excel in productivity applications and multimedia use.

The Acer C7 Chromebook comes with a 320GB traditional hard drive and uses a Chrome operating system, which functions primarily as a browser. Users can access Google's extensive range of services, including Gmail to Google Docs. While apps from Google Play can be added, no software can be loaded.

There are plenty of connectivity options for Acer C7 Chromebook including VGA and HDMI ports for mirroring images on larger screens. The Chromebook also has three USB ports and a 2-in-1 card reader, but there is no optical drive for reading or writing CDs or DVDs.

CostHelper Bottom Line: Advertised prices for the Acer C7 Chromebook are up to $81 less than the $280 base MSRP from at least one retailer.

What People Are Saying:

The Acer C7 Chromebook is an affordable option for consumers looking for a second or third computer. It's meant for low-intensity activity like surfing the Internet or writing emails, but just doesn't put up with demands of high multimedia use. One of the biggest complaints about the model is its short battery life.
  • Fox News: "(F)or most people, Chromebooks are a great secondary computer. All three recent models, ranging in price from $200-450 come highly recommended. You really can't go wrong."
  • "Even in a house with more computers than people, I could see this filling in as a backup machine. (I've used it all day at a tech-policy conference and haven't missed my MacBook Air as much as I thought.) "Road warriors" and "prosumers" probably won't go for it, but home users who don't throw around that kind of marketing vocabulary just might."
  • CNET: " At $199, the Acer C7 is an attractive proposition for anyone looking for a supercheap portable laptop, but the Chrome OS and short battery life mean you'll have to accept a lot of compromises."
