The 3-D DVD movies that play on the new Blu-ray 3-D players and 3-D television sets first came out to market in March 2010. As the market for 3-D home entertainment expands this year, so will the movies and their availability. These movies are available only in Blu-ray format.
Typical costs:
Blu-ray 3-D DVDs typically cost $12-$50, with movies about nature or documentaries starting about $15 and more popular new releases costing $45 or more. For example, the documentary The Universe: 7 Wonders of the Solar System[1] in Blu-ray 3-D costs $12, while Tron: Legacy[2] Blu-ray 3-D release will cost $50.
Some of the current 3-D Blu-ray movies are also exclusive to or bundled to a particular television manufacturer. For example, the movie Avatar in 3-D can only be bought through Panasonic, and the movie Alice in Wonderland 3-D[3] is a Sony special.
In addition to the 3-D Blu-ray movie, other versions such as a regular Blu-ray or normal DVD disc are sometimes also included.
Additional costs:
A 3-D television is required to watch a 3-D movie. These sets can range from $2,000 for a 46" screen size to more than $4,000 for a 65" screen size.
3-D shutter glasses may also be needed if they are not included with the 3-D television. These glasses cost approximately $70-$200 per pair.
A special 3-D Blu-ray player is necessary to play a 3-D Blu-ray movie.
If the movie is an exclusive one put out by a particular 3-D television set manufacturer, then one would either have to buy a bundle or that particular 3-D TV in order to get the movie of choice. When shopping for a particular TV, there are often specials listed detailing which particular movies may be included.
A complete 3-D Home Theater can start at about $2,000 and cost $4,000 or more for a high-end system.
