Wait for Discounts or Sales
There are often significant price reductions and discounts around major holidays including Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day and Labor Day.
Price reductions can also occur when a company is liquidating old inventory to make room for new goods. For example, several manufacturers are discounting PC computers with Windows 7in anticipation of new inventory with Windows 8 installed.
Look for Refurbished Models
Refurbished models are models that have been returned to the manufacturer for a reason other than a faulty device. There can be cosmetic damage on refurbished models, such as minor scratches or dents, but the inner workings of the device are intact. In addition, refurbished models often have the same warranty as new devices. Refurbished models of laptops are available in several retail outlets, such as Best Buy's Outlet Center and on Amazon. In addition, manufacturers also make refurbished models available. For example, Apple sells refurbished laptops with discounts of $150-$220 or more, depending on the model.
Look for Shipping Deals
When shopping with online retailers, look for shipping deals. Some retailers offer free shipping on purchases that exceed a certain amount.
Read Return Policies
Some stores allow customers to return electronic items within two weeks or a few months of purchase if a customer is dissatisfied with the purchase. Best Buy has a 14-day window for returns. Costco offers a 90-day window on returns. Apple offers a 14-day return period on laptops.
