| Borders introduced its Kobo eBook reader in May 2010. Marketed as a less expensive eBook reader than its competitors and considered a relatively no-frills offering, the newest model includes built-in Wi-Fi, allowing users to access and download books, newspapers and magazines. The Kobo also supports PDF files and is available in three colors. For a comparison to other eBook readers, see How Much Does an eBook Reader Cost. | | |
| Typical costs: | - The Kobo Wireless eReader costs $129. It has a 6-inch black and white display, weighs less than 8 ounces and its 1 GB of memory (expandable with memory card to 4 GB) can hold 1,000 books. Users navigate between screens using a four-way directional pad and center-select navigation, and the battery lasts up to two weeks of reading time.
What should be included: | - The Kobo comes with a USB cable, a user guide, 100 preloaded books and a one-year limited warranty. It is available in three colors: metallic silver, pearlized lilac and black. The device does not come with an AC power adapter.
- The Kobo comes preloaded with the Kobo Desktop Application, which allows readers to shop for books, organize their libraries and download content from their computers to the device.
- Users can view PDFs, newspapers and magazines on the Kobo. PDF documents can be added to the Kobo by connecting the device to a computer with the USB cable.
- More than one million public-domain titles, including works by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, are available for free download at the Borders eBook store.
Additional costs: | - The Borders eBook Store has a selection of about 250,000 books, magazines and newspapers. The cost to download books ranges from free to hundreds or thousands of dollars. New York Times Best Sellers and mainstream new releases typically cost about $10. For example, Stieg Larsson's "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" costs $10, and "The Postcard Killers" by James Patterson costs $15. Magazines and newspapers are not currently available for download.
- Protective cases cost about $20 -$35; a screen protector costs $8.
