Typical costs:
  • A complete 3-D Home Theater system starts at about $2,000 and can easily cost $4,000 or more for higher-end audio and visual components. These systems typically include a 3-D television, 3-D glasses and a 3-D Blu-ray player.
  • A 3-D television can either be an LCD-LED or plasma flat panel technology. In general, the plasma sets are slightly less inexpensive than the LCD-LED 3-D panels. A plasma 3-D television ranges from $1,600 for a 50" panel to up to $5,000 or more for a 65" screen size. LED-LCD 3-D televisions can cost from $2,000 for a 46" size to $2,600 for a 55" size.
  • While most 3-D television sets come with one pair of 3-D battery powered active shutter glasses for viewing 3-D content, not all brands will necessary include one. These 3-D glasses can cost $100 -$200. In general, 3-D glasses for one brand don't necessarily work for another brand's 3-D television.

  • 3-D "Home Theater in a Box" packages like the Yamaha YHT-393 usually include a 3-D audio receiver that may also integrate a 3-D Blu-ray player and also includes some basic speakers. This type of all-inclusive system setup can cost $350 -$1,000. However, it does not include the 3-D television or 3-D glasses.
What should be included:
  • The 3-D television set includes a tabletop stand, power cord, remote control and owner's manuals. 3-D glasses may or may not be included.
  • The active shutter 3-D glasses include batteries if they are battery operated, or a USB cable if they are rechargeable.
  • A 3-D Blu-ray player includes a remote control and audio and visual cables as well.
  • A 3-D Blu-ray movies often also includes a non 3-D Blu-ray version of the movie. Some may also include a regular DVD version of the movie as well.
  • A 3-D home audio receiver comes with a remote, power cord and some may include speakers and/or subwoofer as part of the package.
Additional costs:
  • If additional pairs of 3-D glasses are needed for other family members or guests, those cost $100 -$200 each.
  • Each 3-D Blu-ray movie typically costs $14 -$50.

  • Many manufactures also offer various "3-D starter packages." These packages often include additional 3-D glasses and an exclusive 3-D movie that is not sold separately in stores or online.
